The three monotheistic faiths of the western world, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, have a checkered history. Most of us think of the hostility that has characterized their relationship - wars, persecution, and segregation. But there have been moments of inclusion and collaboration. Southern Spain is an excellent place to explore that history - both its graceful moments as well as its more tortured ones.
For interfaith groups, Southern Spain is an incredible destination for study, prayer, and conversation.

Toledo, just outside of Madrid, was once home to a vibrant Jewish community. Over the centuries, visionary leaders in both Christian and Jewish communities fostered an atmosphere of understanding and collaboration. The Synagogue del Transito is an amazing structure that showcases the influence of Moorish architecture and the vibrancy of the Jewish community here.
It is an excellent place to explore Jewish heritage.

Granada is an amazing destination. The Alhambra Palace is one of the jewels of Islamic architecture. The Catholic Monarchs (Ferdinand and Isabella) seized the palace in 1492, forcing the expulsion of Muhammad XII. It was in this palace that the edict expelling Jews from Spain was signed. Granada is thus a place to celebrate cultural achievements as well as some of the more unfortunate examples of religious antipathy.

One of the great centers of Islamic scholarship was Cordova. It also boasted an important Jewish community that coexisted with the Muslim one. The Mezquita - the mosque - was one of the largest and most beautiful in the world. It is a great place to explore Muslim beliefs about worship, art, and community. There is a museum of three civilizations in Cordova with examples of visionary men and women who fostered understanding and respect between religions.

Seville offers many opportunities to explore the relationship between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The Cathedral - largest Gothic Church in the world and 3rd largest church - is a magnificent architectural gem but also an example of Christian triumphalism.
The nearby Alcazar is a magnificent palace blending Moorish and Christian elements. It was here that expeditions to the Americas were commissioned.

Throughout Southern Spain there are archaeological sites, charming villages, and monuments that narrate the rich history of the region.
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam influenced more than religious practice - leaving their imprint on food, language, and customs.
